Lewis was the first born child of George E. Purnell and Mary Martha Poe.

In 1918 he worked as a trackman for the B & O Railroad in Oakland, Maryland. By 1920 he was employed as a laborer in a mill in Oakland.

About 1926 Lewis married Sarah Amelia Bunce, daughter of Charles Bunce and Ida V. Wilmot. In 1930 they were living in Loch Lynn Heights and Lewis was working as a laborer in a cannery.

In 1936 he fathered a child out of wedlock with his fifteen year old niece Martha Austin, daughter of his half-sister Dessie. Lewis never took responsibility for the child and Martha had to raise him on her own the best she could.

Sometime after the 1940 census, Lewis married Geneva Zoe Soult and they had three children: Marjorie; Garth; Barbara.

Lewis died of cardiovascular disease.
