☆~ VETERAN, WORLD WAR II (1939-1945) ~☆

ROBERT L. GIRTON SR., A much-loved husband, father, and grandfather, Robert L. Girton Sr., of Green, Ohio, passed away peacefully at his home on May 21, 2013.

The son of the late Charles and Edna Girton, he was born in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania on August 24, 1925, graduating from Bloomsburg High School in 1943 where he excelled at basketball and football. Wanting his son to be well-rounded, Bob's father required him to be in both the halftime band and play on the team. Unfortunately, helmets were yet to include facemasks, so as testament to Bob's determination, he perfected the art of the "air trumpet" to overcome the frequently split lip.

Graduating high school in the midst of World War II, Bob joined the Navy as a pilot (1943). At Corpus Christi, freed from his halftime band commitment, he excelled as quarterback of the Air Devils of St. Mary's Pre-Flight. Dedicating nearly 15 years in service to our country (active and reserve), ultimately achieving the rank of Lieutenant, he remained a man who never forgot his roots or his sense of humor. He took great pleasure in "borrowing" his P-51 for dive-bombing missions to visit his Aunt Pearl who regrettably, and painfully, took refuge in the nearby rose bushes.

Following active duty, Bob attended Temple University to study Business Administration, Economics, and continue his football career. After graduating and declining offers to play in the NFL, he was hired by the Firestone Tire & Rubber Company (1951). His ambition, integrity, and charisma, virtues that permeated all aspects of his life, empowered his rapid success and promotion.

At age 35 he joined the Dayton Tire & Rubber Company as Head of Production. Later he became Vice President of Manufacturing at General Tire, traveling the world as global head of international production.

Thereafter, he joined Oliver Rubber in California, and finally, the Bailey Corporation in New Hampshire. At Bailey, he opened a new production facility in Cuba, Missouri that, through his leadership, was operating and making a profit in just 28 days. His motto: "Plan your work, and work your plan!" Having achieved his professional aspirations, Bob brought that same dedication and passion to a new role focused on raising his youngest children.

Wanting more time at home, he founded a business in Little Rock, Arkansas and later moved that business back to Ohio to be closer to extended family (1989). Along the way our family enjoyed inquiries on whether he was dad or grandpa (He was an amazing father!), the unwitting question concerning his expertise in 1930's American history (He was actually there!), an ill-timed endeavor into payphones (Who could have predicted cell phones?), or school lunches that put any brownbag to shame (Contents were also useful for lunchroom bartering).

We are comforted and joyful in the memories of a remarkable man who lived his life in strength, courage, conviction, and faith (50+ year member and 32nd Degree Mason). As his Coach Kotys recognized over 60 years ago, Bob "was respected by all who came into his charge. His leadership was outstanding, and I am certain he would make good in any endeavor which he undertakes. He is a representative of true Americanism, and his citizenship is unquestionable."

Bob was preceded in death by parents, Charles and Edna Girton, sister Grace Baird, nephew Glenn Beckley, in-laws Bruce and Irma Rodenkirch, and brother-in-law Ken Cassidy.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Sharon, sons Bob Girton Jr. and Greg Girton, daughters Terry (Rod) Snow, Cindy (Scott) Bennett, grandchildren Katy and Sean Bennett, Jennifer Snow Patterson and Kelly Snow, and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Julie Cassidy (Al) and Susan (DeWayne) Harris, niece and nephews Todd (Lynne) Cassidy, Kara Cassidy Poth and Ben Harris.

Additionally, the family would like to thank Yvonne and Ed of Summa Home Hospice, and especially, Julie and Sue for their never-ending support.

Our Hero will be buried with full military honors at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Road, Rittman, Ohio, Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at 1:30 P.M.
