Walter Duane Barnes, son of John and Hanna (Weimeyer) Barnes, was born April 13, 1913 on the family farm northwest of Harper. He passed away Monday afternoon, May 19, 2008, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita, one month after his 95th birthday.

Walt, as family and friends knew him, attended Octagon Grade School west of Harper and graduated from Harper High School. After high school he started farming.

On April 6, 1942, at the age of 29, he joined the United States Air Force. He was a Corporal of the 17th Bomb Group, 432 Squadron, stationed mostly in Africa. He received his honorable discharge on October 19, 1945. He returned to Harper where he has lived since that time.

On July 19, 1948, Walt married Edna May Fox at the Courthouse in Anthony before Judge Beebe. They made their home in Harper and were blessed with one daughter, Cindy. Walt worked at Esping's Gamble Store, owned and operated Barnes Service Station along with Edna May, and later went to work at Cessna Aircraft Company as a hand foreman until his retirement.

Walt enjoyed fishing with his daughter, Cindy and also did a lot of refinishing of old furniture. He was baptized into the United Methodist Church and was a past member of the American Legion, both of Harper.

His parents, three brothers, Bill, Wesley and George, one infant sister, Mary Hanna Barnes, preceded Walter in death.

He will be missed by his wife of 60 years, Edna Barnes of Harper; his daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Clarence Campbell of Pflugerville, TX; two granddaughters, Valeria and Victoria Campbell; a brother, Chester and his wife Maxine of Harper; sisters-in-law, Naomi Fenton of Harper, Virginia Fields of Great Bend, KS, Harriett Fox of Harper and Carolyn Hunzicker and husband Bob of Lenexa, KS; and many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
