Former Auxiliary for the Archdiocese of New York and Bishop of the Titular See of Naiera, Monsignor Patrick Vincent Ahern was born on March 8, 1919, in Manhattan, New York, and was educated at Manhattan College and Cathedral College, New York; St. Joseph's Seminary, Yonkers; Saint Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri; and the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana.

Ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of New York on January 27, 1945, he successively served as Cardinal Spellman's secretary from June 1958 through 1967.

At 50 years of age, Ahern was appointed Auxiliary for the Metropolitan See of New York by Pope Paul VI, receiving his episcopal consecration with the Titular See of Naiera on March 19, 1970 at the Cathedral of St. Patrick in New York City from Cardinal Terence Cooke assisted by Archbishop John Joseph Maguire and Bishop Edwin Bernard Broderick.

Successively, Bishop Ahern was appointed Episcopal Vicar for the Bronx, where he served until September 1976. When the Vicariate was divided, he was appointed as Episcopal Vicar for the Northwest Bronx until 1980. Moreover he served as Episcopal Vicar for Staten Island from September 1980 to November 1990.

In 1990 Bishop Ahern was appointed Vicar for Development. Retiring from office at 75 years of age on July 1, 1994, Monsignor Ahern was regarded as one of the foremost experts on the spirituality of Saint Thérèse de Lisieux.

Bishop Ahern died at the Mary Manning Walsh Home in Manhattan at the age of 92 on Saturday, March 19, 2011. His Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Patrick's Cathedral on Thursday, March 24, at 11 am.
