Virgie Irene Childress, age 79, of Southern Pines, died Sunday (December 1, 2002) at First Health Moore Regional Hospital, in Pinehurst North Carolina.

Funeral services will be held at 7:00PM on Tuesday, December 3, 2002, at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, with the Reverend Greg Newton officiating. The family will receive friends at the church after the service.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00AM Thursday, December 5, 2002, at the Palm Memorial Gardens in Matheny, West Virginia.

Born July 14, 1923 in Richwood, West Virginia, to the late Frank and Lydia Williams Birley. She owned and operated a day care from her Southern Pines home for many years. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and was a former member of Toneda Baptist Church in Oceana, West Virginia.

Surviving are her son, Rodney Childress of Southern Pines, her daughter Sandy C. Smith of Southern Pines; her brothers, Walter Birley and Carl Birley, both of Madison, West Virginia; her sisters, Ramona Linville, and Anna Samples, both of Oceana, West Virginia; grandchildren, Rodney Childress Jr. and Chad Childress, two great-grandchildren, Brandon Childress and Allison Childress.

Boles Funeral Home and Crematory of Southern Pines is in charge of arrangements.
