The next morning her mother found her sick and vomiting and took her to a local children's hospital. During this time Lucia apparently communicated to some of her friends via text messaging about what she had done. But Lucia and her friends apparently did not communicate to Lucia's family or the doctors trying to save her. Doctors were unable to identify the exact cause of her liver failure.
After four days she slipped into a coma and was flown to UCLA Medical Center in a urgent attempt to save her. During this time one of Lucia's friends told a nurse what Lucia had taken. But sadly, it was too late to save her. Lucia died of liver failure brought on by the overdose of acetaminophen found in the cold tablets.
Lucia was a friendly, humorous, loving person whose parents, brother, family and friends loved her and miss her dearly.
Her story should serve as the ultimate reminder to all: Do not let fear prevent you from speaking up and coming forward in an emergency. Lucia's story also obviously points out the dangers of recreational drug abuse.
At her funeral, attended by hundreds of people, her parents bravely had her casket open so that those in attendance could see the impact of the overdose. Lucia's body had increased to 170 pounds from her normal athletic 125 pounds.
