He worked at Vernon Avenue Bowling alley where he was a pin setter. While doing that he drew up the first plans for an automatic pin setter. George Herbert Skolfield reported in May 1948 that: "Tom has not been well for sometime. He worked 72 hours a week (night. work) during the war and with his other duties had a breakdown, never fully recovered from an operation in September, seemed to improve but got the flu in February and lost what he gained.
