John moved with his family from Wellsville, Utah, to Beaver Canyon, Idaho, in 1882. As a young man he drove the stage coach through Yellowstone National Park. While at his work he also cooked the meals and attended to the needs of his passengers. A wealthy passenger from the East took a great liking to him and offered John a job there. One fellow asked John to live with him and he would provide for his education. He refused all offers because of his great love for the West.

John's parents owned and managed a Hotel for many years. While he was attending school at USAC in Logan, Utah, they asked him to come home to help them with the business. Before John left College he met and married Effie Eliza Deal and together they returned to Dubois, Idaho, to help his folks in the Hotel business. Some years later it burned down. John thought the new land opening up at Rupert would be a good place to raise a family so he filed on some land in 1901. He used his team of horses to help make canals, drain ditches and build railroad tracks. He and his wife grubbed sagebrush off the land. With harrow, plow and leveler they made the soil bloom into many crops. John's father, Abraham, taught him the Blacksmith trade. He and his father were very good carpenters and helped each other build a nice home.

John was a talented musician, singing and playing the piano. He was a mathematician also wrote poetry. He was Chairman of Hopewell School District for many years and Commissioner of Minidoka County four years. Besides farming he was Ditch Rider thirty-six years also active in Community and Civic affairs; belonged to the Grange and Moose Lodge.

John and Effie Eliza sold the farm and moved to Jerome, where some time later she passed away following a stroke. After six years John met and married Rose Hoag. They made their home in Marsing, Idaho, and he died there at age eighty-eight.
