Mary Ann was born to Tandy and Catherine Brockman on a farm southeast of Crawfordsville, Indiana some three years after her extended family moved there from Kentucky in 1826 as early pioneers.
When she was 13 years old, the family moved from Indiana westward to Linn County, Iowa in 1842 to become early pioneers once again. Her parents later bought their homestead southwest of Springville, Iowa in 1848 when Mary Ann was 19 years old.
In May 1855, in Brown Township, Linn County, Iowa Mary Ann (at the age of 25) married 27 year old Joel Signor Irish who was born in Peru, Clinton NY son of Israel Irish and Esther Wood(They were in the Quaker settlement at Peru). They were farmers in Linn County. On the 1870 census four of their children were listed. It also stated that four of their daughters died as young children or infants.
By 1880, only 10 year old John was still living at home with them when Mary Ann was 50 and Joel was 52.
Mary Ann died at the age of 70 in 1899 and Joel died in 1907 at the age of 81.
