Emmit Ray Kenney, died September 10, 2010 at his home in Stockton, Missouri.
Born June 11, 1921, at the home place in Humansville, Missouri to James Silas Kenney and Manda Emeline Garrison, Ray grew up the youngest of four brothers, Noble, Hilbert, Floyd, and James, and his sister, Cora.
As a young man, Ray left home looking for work in Kansas City. After working odd jobs he joined the Army in June of 1939. Taking the only opening available, he worked as an orderly, but quickly moved on to the Army boxing team. Stationed in Ft. Leavenworth, he worked the motored security patrol on base.
On January 16, 1942, in a stroke of complete brilliance, Ray married the love of his life, Wilma Mae Douglas.
After a brief adventure as a copper miner in Miami, Arizonia, he served as a drill instructor preparing troops to go overseas. Concerned for their welfare, Ray insisted on joining the men he trained. Serving as a platoon leader, he fought in France, Italy, and Germany.
February 24, 1945 he was hit with tree-top mortar and injured in the back, intestines, and left leg. In May, he returned state-side to continue convalescing. Finally, in September he was discharged from O'Reilly Hospital in Springfield.
Once returned to the loving arms of his wife, the couple moved to Kansas City. There, Ray entered Real Estate school and worked selling real estate. In 1946, they moved to Flagstaff, Arizona where Ray tried his hand in the movie industry working as an extra in the John Wayne move, Fort Apache.
Due to Wilma's health and concern for their unborn child, Ray returned to Kansas City where he worked teaching real estate.
Their first child, Eric Ray Kenney, was born and died August 23, 1948.
In April of 1949 Ray joined the Kansas City Police Department where he made detective in 1961, joined the Intelligence department in January of 1962, and the LEIU in July of 1966.August 3, 1950, Ray and Wilma had a daughter, Debra Rae Kenney. Debra married John Thomas Langford and their children are Bettilou and John Ray Langford.
In the early 1960's, Ray was saved and began teaching Adult Sunday School classes. He taught at several churches through the years ending his teaching here at the First Southern Baptist Church of Stockton.
In September of 1977, Ray and Wilma adopted Bettilou ‘Betsey' Kenney. Betsey married Neal Preston Cross and their children are Emily Rosa and Sara Lynn Cross.
In 1978, Ray retired from the Kansas City Police Department and took the chief of security position at Rockhurst College where he worked until 1989.
Looking forward to retirement Ray moved his family to Stockton, Missouri in July of 1987 where he enjoyed being an active part of the community, serving on the City Council and Board of the Stockton Nursing Home.
Ray enjoyed raising hunting dogs, hunting and fishing, and horseback riding.
Ray leaves behind his beloved family. A daughter, Debra Rae Kenney of Koos Bay, Oregon. Two grandchildren, Betsey Kenney, with husband Neal Preston Cross of Bolivar, Missouri, and John Ray Langford, with wife Christine Elizabeth Langford of Belton, Missouri. Four great-grand children, Emily Rosa Cross, Sara Lynn Cross, Elizabeth Rae Langford, and Gabriel Allen Langford. And a host of nephews, niece, cousins, and family.
Visitation service will be held in the fellowship hall of the First Southern Baptist Church of Stockton, Missouri on Monday, September 13, 2010 from 6 to 8 pm.
The funeral will be held at the First Southern Baptist Church of Stockton, Missouri on Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at 10 am. Interment will follow the service at Alder Cemetery.
