Very active early pioneer in LaGrange County, IN. John served as LaGrange County Surveyor, laying out many roads and most notably laying out the then county seat of Lima (Howe) in 1834. He was also a LaGrange County Recorder, 1834-55 and Postmaster, 1845. John was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Lima and was very active in organizing support for LaGrange County's contribution of many soldiers in the Civil War.
