Samuel A. Cherry, born 1854, died May 11, 1881. 2nd Lieut, 5th Cavalry, U.S.A. Age: 31yr 27days *** Lt Cherry was born in New York about 1854, attended USMA West Point, New York and graduated in 1877. Lt Cherry was Adjutant and lead scout for Major Thomas Thornburgh's unit during the Milk Creek Massacre. His quick thinking, training and judgement surely kept the entire unit from being ambushed and killed, as testified to by Capt J Scott Payne, 5th Cavalry (New York Times, Nov 9, 1879 article).

He was buried at Fort Niobrara Post Cemetery until 14 March 1928(?), when his remains were exhumed & conveyed to Greenwood Cemetery, Lagrange, Lagrange County, Indiana for reburial.
