In 1879 they drove overland from Sidney NE to Rapid City and settled in Rapid Valley on what is now known as the Parsons ranch. They lived there until 1908 when they moved in to Rapid City, he husband died in June of 1927.
Katherine had long been active in local organizations, including Congregational Church groups, and had been a member of Coterie since a short time after it was founded.
Three of her five children predecesed her. Surviving her are Frank and Herbert Read of Rapid City.
The 1890 Reconstructed census of Pennington County land owners and residents lists three children, Franklin M 10, John Burns 7, died in 1943 in Colorado and Herbert N 5,two children Madge and Eddie died in 1882 and were orginally buried in Plateau Cemetery and moved to MTV in 1902.
