Mary Ann was the eldest daughter, fourth child of the ten children of John and Mary (Marr) Bender. On March 1, 1828 she wed Alexander McKerlie. Just four months after their tenth anniversary he passed away, leaving Mary Ann with two small children ages 4 and 15 months. The couple had previously lost their first born, a son John age 2 years, 7 months, and 10 days. Mary Ann married her second husband George Rysdale about four years later on September 14, 1842. They had one son together.
