Earl "Raymond" Ball, 87, of Brookfield, Mo., passed away Sunday, April 25, 2010 at Pershing Memorial Hospital, Brookfield, Mo.
Mr. Ball was born April 14, 1923 in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Earl Barnett and Ida Mable (Albin) Ball. He married Mary Frances Newell on Dec. 8, 1949 in Kansas City, Mo. She preceded him in death on May 24, 1999.
Mr. Ball worked as a welder for Blacks, Sivels & Bryson Manufacturing before entering the service in 1943. During World War II, he was a member of the Airborne Engineers with the Gilder Corp. His tour took him to Hawaii, where he helped build B-29 hangers. In Guam, he helped build Northfield and Northwest Field landing strips plus the Field Hospital. Also during his tour of duty, he helped construct the Ha Ha Harbor runway for B-29 Aircraft. Christmas of 1945, Ray was on an aircraft carrier headed for the states. He was discharged at Fort Logan, Co., on Jan. 14, 1946.
Mr. Ball returned to being a welder after serving his country. In 1947, he left Kansas City and moved to Manhattan, Kan., where he farmed with his brother Kenneth and his father. In Feb. of 1959 he moved to Brookfield, Mo., where he opened his own welding shop. During Ray's lifetime, he was the owner of Ray Ball Welding and Radiator, Ray Ball Auction, and Ball Real Estate. Ray was a member of the Brookfield Masonic Lodge, Veteran's of Foreign Wars and the Grace Baptist Church.
He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law of Chillicothe, Mo.; one son and daughter-in-law of Glendive, Mont.; one grandson of Billings, Mont.; and one great-granddaughter of Glendive, Mont.; two sisters of Sun City, Ariz.; a devoted companion of Hamilton, Mo.; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, Kenneth Ball and Barnett Ball; and two sisters, Thelma Herbert and Ruth Alford.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 30, 2010 at the Rhodes Funeral Home, Brookfield, Mo., with Pastor Frank Bolin officiating with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery, Brookfield, Mo. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday, April 29, 2010 at the Rhodes Funeral Home with family receiving friends that evening from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
