It is believed that James Frank Porter first married Kate Schneider who was born in Colorado about 1890 and was the daughter of Hugo Schneider and Kate Abendschan. Apparently, Kate died after birth of a stillborn child. They had two children, James Hugo and Jessie L. Porter. Both children died of appendicitis at a young age.
James next married Ethel B Smith. They had two children, Lavona Hope and Harry W.
James worked as a locomotive engineer in Colorado and probably met his wife through her father who was a section foreman. After marrying Ethel, they lived in Kansas where he was a farmer. They later moved to Little Rock, Arkansas where James worked for the City Ice and Fuel Company where his brother William worked.
