On Nov. 2, 1926, Mabel Chase made history when she was one of the first woman to be elected sheriff in the United States. She served one term as sheriff of Kiowa County Kansas from 1926 to 1928. She served as undersheriff for her husband, Frank, prior to her election.

According to the Kansas State Historical Society, she drove an armor-plated car with bullet-proof windows and carried a submachine gun to stop bootleggers and bank robbers.


Mabel Chase was born April 15, 1876, at Charlottesville, Indiana. She died at her home near Pea Ridge, Arkansas, where she had lived since the 1940's. She was married to Frank 0. Chase on March 23, 1899, at Barclay. She was a member of the Haviland Friends Church and a member of the Royal Neighbors Lodge.

Mrs. Chase was a former resident of Haviland and Greensburg, Kansas. She was a retired school teacher. Survivors included the widower, Frank 0. Chase; two sons, Athol C. Chase Sr. and Jack Chase; two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Wadel and Mrs. Carrie Forree; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
