William served in the 81st Regiment Ohio Volunteers in the Civil War and was later appointed Chaplain with the 110 US Colored Troops. Prisoner of War records show he was captured by the enemy at Athens, AL 25 Sept 1864 and confined at Richmond VA. He was paroled at Memphis TN 15 Nov 1864. He was ordained as a local preacher in the Methodist Episcopal Church, Quarterly Conference of the Columbus Station, in 1846.
