MILITARY BIO:
Aubrey O. Evans was shown as possibly residing in Minden, Webster Co., Louisiana when he registered for the draft. He enlisted in the US Army at Jacksonville AAF, FL., on March 18, 1941 ... His marital status was single and his education was grammar schooling. His serial number was 34029106, as a member of the regular pre-war army. His pre-war occupation code was shown as 'farming'. He was assigned to the 455th AAA Bn., after the unit was formed in Sept. 1942..The 455th AAA trained at Camp Stewart and Ft. Benning, Ga., then went overseas to Norfolk, England (in Sept. 1943). Aubrey was in Battery 'A'. His rank was Pvt... Aubrey's unit was located at a B-17 bomber airbase at Snetterton Heath, Norfolk, England.

In July 1944, the 455th AAA went to France for 'Operation Cobra', as part of Patton's 3rd Army, Walker's XX Corps. They later went into Germany and Austria and returned home in October 1945. The unit shotdown/damaged over 130 German aircraft and became the second highest-scoring antiaircraft unit in Patton's 3rd Army. Aubrey appeared in the group photo of Btry. 'A', taken at Kettering, England in Sept. 1943, shortly after the unit arrived in Europe.

Aubrey O. Evans is something of a 'mystery man' to research. His residence in 1941 was not indicated on his enlistment papers. His earlier draft registration card indicates he was in Louisiana. He enlisted in Florida. At Kettering, England, in Sept. 1943, he appears to have been a member of Btry. 'A'. By Oct. of 1944, he was shown in 455th AAA HQ Battery, and received a Good Conduct Medal. His rank at that time was Technician 5th level (Corporal). By December of 1944, he was a cook in Btry. 'C', and was wounded in a German air attack, being hit in the patella (knee cap) and the cheek. He was discharged in July 1945 due to the knee injury and 'limitation of motion'. He came to the end of his life at age 80 in Arkansas. His final residence was shown in Lawson, Union Co., AR.
