David was still single and a miner living at Wickenburg, Arizona, when he was admitted to the Pacific Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, at Sawtelle, California, on January 17, 1910. David indicated his next-of-kin as (his brother?) D. H. Armstrong of Los Angeles, California. David Armstrong died at the Sawtelle home five months later and was buried in the Los Angeles National Cemetery.
