David Armstrong enlisted as a private at Auburn, California, September 13, 1861, and was mustered into Company A, 4th California Infantry, September 21. Private Armstrong was mustered out at Drum Barracks, California, October 13, 1864. David filed for a Civil War veteran's pension in Arizona June 3, 1895, and received application No. 1,167,488 and certificate No. 1,004,631. He re-filed for his veteran's pension June 5, 1907. David was still single and a miner living at Wickenburg, Arizona, when he was admitted to the Pacific Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, at Sawtelle, California, on January 17, 1910. David indicated his next-of-kin as (his brother?) D. H. Armstrong of Los Angeles, California. David Armstrong died at the Sawtelle home five months later and was buried in the Los Angeles National Cemetery.
