Opal Ilene Newville was born September 19, 1916 in Oklahoma, daughter of John Harold Newville and Edith Elizabeth (maiden name unknown).

In 1920, the family was living in Lexington, Oklahoma (Cleveland County) and Harold and Edith had three children: Opal, Claude, and Frances. In 1930, they were still in Lexington, and Harold, was age 33, a farmer, born in Oklahoma; and Edith, was age 31, born in Oklahoma. By this time, Harold and Edith had eight children, all born in Oklahoma: Opal, age 13; Claude, age 12; Frances, age 11; Howard, age 8; Orval, age 6; Lela, age 4, Lilly, age 3 years 7 months; and Martha, age 1 year 5 months.

On November 9, 1930, the children's mother died. Edith was buried in the Lexington Cemetery. Sometime after that, Harold married again to Lula A. (maiden name unknown), who was born September 25, 1906.

On February 6, 1937, in Purcell, Oklahoma (McClain County),
Opal married John Coy Barnes, who was born December 5, 1916, in Oxford, Arkansas (Izard County).
