During the early years of their marriage, Clay worked as a hob nailer for the Brown Shoe Company. He went to work for the United States Post Office in the 1920's, and the family moved to University City in St. Louis County.
Clay and Rose divorced in the early 1950's.
Children from first marriage: 4 daughters.
Clay later remarried in the mid-1950's. His second wife was Mrs. Marie (Grisham) Mazza. She was the widow of Frank Antonio "Tony" Mazza. She had children with Tony, and with her first husband, Samuel Crane.
Clay and Marie eventually separated and/or divorced.
Children from second marriage: None.
Clay lived alone on his farm, located 7 miles southwest of Vienna, Missouri. On 14 Mar 1968, a rural mail carrier was making his morning rounds when he discovered Clay's body in his home.
At the time of his death due to a heart attack, he was 69 years, 11 months and 4 days.
He was survived by 4 daughters.
Funeral services were conducted on 15 Mar 1968 at Birmingham Funeral Home in Maries County. Burial was at Waidelich Cemetery.
