KINGSLEY - Marion K. Maxon, 85, of Kingsley, died Friday.
Born Nov. 21, 1914, in Kingsley, she was the daughter of Eugene and Lulu (Pierce) Knight. On Nov. 9, 1934, in Kingsley, she married Charles Maxon. Marion began teaching from county normal training at Country Home School. She received a special certificate in elementary education, earned a bachelor's degree from Central Michigan University in 1954 and completed her master's degree from Michigan State University a few years later. Marion taught at Rural Paradise School for two years, Fife Lake school for 12 years and Ewen school for two years. Mrs. Maxon was a member of MSU extension service, retiring in 1959, and was named to Who's Who at MSU in 1971. She also received national recognition for her work in family life education, worked as home economist in Marquette, Houghton, Ontonagon and Keweenaw counties, and was director of the MSU extension in Benzie, Mason, Manistee, Wexford and Missaukee counties. Her memberships include Grand Traverse Area Genealogical Society, DAR, Rumpled Quilts Kin, Grand Traverse Writers Group, Mayfield Chapel, Kingsley Flower Club and supported her husband's efforts in conservation. A Kingsley resident most of her life, Marion was also a 4-H club leader for ten years. She is survived by a daughter, Shirley (Tom) Newcombe of Bay City, a son, Dennis (Constance) Maxon of Eddyville, Ill.; three grandsons, Kenneth and Gregory Maxon and Thomas Newcombe; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1985; five brothers, Lucius, Colon, Ellis, Cyril and Ward Knight; and two sisters, Winifred and Hazel. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with Rev. Bill Smith officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Kingsley. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association.
