HELEN MAE THURSTON
Helen MaeThurston, 79, of Midland and formerly of Gladwin, died Sunday, May 7, 1995 att he MidMichigan Regional Medical Center. Born April 7, 1916 in Gladwin, she graduated from Gladwin High School and Howell School of Business on Sept. 21,1957. Mrs. Thurston played the organ at the Sacred Heart Church in Gladwin for many years before her marriage. In the late 1940s, she formed her own all-girl dance band and they performed for many years in the Houghton Lake area.
Mrs. Thurston was employed as a deputy clerk with the Gladwin County Road Commission until her retirement. Her other earlier employments included being acomtomator operator in Muskegon Heights. She was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Midland and had lived in Las Vegas with her husbandfrom 1970 until 1990 when they moved to Midland. Mrs. Thurston was an avid bingo player.
The former Helen Hanna married Herman Thurstonand he preceded her in death Nov. 26, 1994. Surviving are 2 stepsons, Jerry and wife Lois and David, all of Midland; one stepdaughter, JoAnn and husband Leonard Cobb of Midland; one brother, Leo Hanna of Fullerton; one sister, Marie Richmond of Mt. Pleasant; 8 stepgrandchildren; several stepgreat-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Lucky, Wendell andLarry Hanna; and one sister, Elsie Hanna.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. (today) Wednesday fromthe Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with the Rev. Father John R. Johnsonofficiating. Burial will follow in the Midland Cemetery. Those planning anexpression of sympathy are asked to consider the Blessed Sacrement Catholic Church. Arrangements were handled by the Ware-Smith-Woolever & Co. Funeral Home of Midland.
