Olene "Granny" Phares Staas

MONAHANS — Mrs. Olene "Granny" Staas was born June 6, 1922, in Ada, OK. When Olene was about two years old, her father decided to move to Texas after having to hide under the porch when the law came to get him for bootlegging.

Olene grew up around Lampasas until she was ten. From there, the family moved around to San Angelo and then on to Littlefield, where drought and the Depression wiped them out. In 1935 the family headed to Big Spring and worked as farm hands. From there, it was on to San Diego to stay with her brother Mitchell. In the summer of 1942, Olene and her mother went to work for Consolidated Aircraft making bombers. Here she met Al Staas. Al had grown up in Big Springs, but the two had never met before.

Olene and Al were married January 23, 1943. Upon his return from France in 1946, they bought a cafe with her brother Mitch. They sold the cafe in early 1949 and moved on to New Mexico. Al and Olene were sharecroppers until 1958 and eventually settled in Pyote. In 1988, Al passed away and in 1991, Olene moved to Monahans.

Services for Olene will be held on Thursday, December 27 at 11:00 a.m. at the Wickett Church of Christ. Burial will follow at the Monahans Memorial Cemetery.

Olene is survived by her sister, Agnes Dickey of Houston; brother, Roy Phares of San Diego, CA; children, Richard Staas of Pyote and Donald Staas of Quinlan, TX; grandchildren, Lisa Wilmon of Monahans, Teresa Anaya of Flower Mound, Kristi Williams of Carrolton, Jennifer Staas of San Angelo, Tina Wallace of Odessa, Mike Wallace of Quinlan, Paula Dean of Pyote, Jamie Millard of Durrant, OK, and Shay Keener of Monahans; great-grandchildren, Kelly Anaya, Forest Wilmon, Addison Wilmon, Brandy Dean, Amanda Dean, Codey Aldridge, Taylor Millard, Austin Millard, Derrick Millard and Avery Keener.

Olene was preceded in death by her sister, Jewel Davis; brothers, Mitchell Phares and Henry Phares; daughter, Pat Fritsche on April 24, 2001, and husband, Al Staas on February 2, 1988.
