ELKHART - Ben Edward Barnes Jr., 55, was born April 5, 1953, in Elkhart, IN, to Ben E. and Leona V. Barnes. He graduated from Elkhart High School in 1971, went on to obtain a degree in music from Indiana University at Bloomington and later obtained his master's degree in business administration. Ben was employed at Brookhaven College as the executive dean of administrative and educational technology. He also served on the planning and zoning commission for the City of Lancaster for several years. He served on numerous ad hoc search committees for the city and school districts, was president of the Ashmore Estates Homeowners Association, and vice president of the Southwest Youth Football Association for a number of years. He was in the National organization of "Up With People," "The Three Deans" at Brookhaven College, "The Barbershop Quartet" and the "Singing Hoosiers" at Indiana University. Ben loved fishing, golfing, bowling, horseback riding, tennis, chess and technology. From a child he was blessed to master many musical instruments such as the flute, piano, guitar and trombone. His parents, Ben Edward Barnes Sr. and Leona V. Barnes, preceded him in death. Ben passed away May 5, 2008. Ben's loving memories will be cherished by his wife of 23 years, Ivory R. Barnes; sons, Ben E. Barnes III and Samuel K. Barnes; his sisters, Carlen Sanders (Charles) and Delilah Armstrong; brothers, Dana Barnes (Blinder), Ross Barnes (Trine), Pastor Steven Barnes (Loretta), Darryl Barnes and Guy Reed (Lisa); his mother-in-law, Mary Rattler; and sisters-in-law, Johnnie Rattler and Gwyneith Black (Albert); a brother-in-law, David Rattler (Paula); and a host of uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and cousins. Services will be at 11:00 AM Friday, May 9, in Friendship West Baptist Church, 2020 W. Wheatland Road, Dallas, TX. Interment will follow at Laurel Land Memorial Park. A wake will be held at 7:00 PM today in Laurel Land Memorial Chapel.
