Born Nov. 25, 1927, in Aurora, the daughter of Maurice and Anna Grommes Burnell, she passed away Saturday, May 6, 2006, at Sherman Hospital in Elgin. She had been a resident of the Elgin area for most of her life and was a graduate of St. Edward High School. She had been employed by Ackemann's Department Store and then Valley Bank before retiring. Mrs. Follis was a member of St. Laurence Catholic Church in Elgin. She had been active in the Altar and Rosary Guild of the church, and in Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. In her later years, she enjoyed watching NASCAR.
Surviving are six daughters, Ann (John) Baumgartner of Elgin, Sandy (Steve) Schubert of Elgin, Mary (Bobby) Walker of Elgin, Ellen (Gale) Whaley of Columbus, Ohio, Kay (Bruce) Newberg of Elgin and Becky Follis of Elgin; seven sons, Tony (Nancy) Follis of Elgin, Gerry (Jill) Follis of Roscoe, Jeff Follis of Elgin, Dan (Judy) Follis of Elgin, Mark Follis of Elgin, David (Lori) Follis of Elgin and Nick (Tammy) Follis of Fredericktown, Mo.; her mother, Anna Burnell of Elgin; 25 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother; and six sisters. She was preceded in death by her father; and her husband, James A. Follis, whom she married on June 11, 1949. To honor her love of reading, make memorials to the Gail Borden Public Library, Elgin.
