Opal was born in Ossian, Indiana and grew up in Elgin, Illinois. She was the eldest of five children (three sisters Elsie, Jessie and Vera, and one brother, Weisell) born to Charles Clinton Monroe and Alice Izora Crickmore. Opal married Earl O'Farrell in 1916 and they had three children: Earl, Linette and Joyce. Opal worked at Sherman Hospital in Elgin, Illinois as a Nurse's Aide for over two decades until her retirement in 1973 at age 75. She was survived by her two daughters, 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Although she was diminutive in stature (4' 10"), she had the heart of a lion and was a tower of strength to her entire family. She is remembered with much love.
