The son of Isaac Adams, he married Sophia Rowinsky July 17, 1845, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and fathered Adeline (b. @1848) and Virdillia S. (b. 1859 - married John S. Gibbons). He moved to Hellam Township, York County, Pennsylvania, where he worked as a canal lock keeper on the Susquehanna-Tidewater Canal. He stood 5' 6" tall and had dark hair and light eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at Wrightsville, York County, October 1, 1861, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg as a private with Co. I, 76th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Keystone Zouaves"), but fell ill and discharged by surgeon's certificate April 4, 1862.

In 1865, he moved to Ohio with his in-laws.
