Robert George Middleton passed away on Tuesday, April 10, 2012. Bob was born on November 6, 1917, in Camden, NJ to Charles and Elizabeth Middleton. He graduated from Camden High School in January 1937. Bob's education also included evening classes at the University of Pennsylvania, and certifications from the Purchasing Agents' Association.
In 1940, Bob married Elizabeth G. (Betty) Morris and they had a daughter, Eileen. Bob and Betty shared their lives until Betty's death in 1976. Bob is survived by Eileen and Joe Withers, their children, Steve (Tammy) Withers; Denise Marchione; four great-grandchildren. (Nicholas and Samantha Marcbione, Taryn. and Karsen Withers). Bob remarried Concetta S. (Connie) Sciotto in 1979. Connie passed away in 2003. In his later years, Bob was able to take trips with his family and fulfill many life goals (going to Ireland; taking a cruise) which are cherished memories that will stay with them all.
Bob was active in the military, reflecting his love for his country. He first joined the National Guard, 114 Infantry, Headquarters Company in 1937. In 1939, he was inducted into federal service with the U.S. Amy. Re was discharged from the Army in 1940. He then served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves during World War II, from 1942 through 1945.
Bob was a knowledgeable and committed worker throughout his professional life. He started working at RCA in Camden in 1940. Bob retired from RCA. after 40 years of service in 1980, as Manager of Government Purchasing. Hob's work led him to reside in Virginia, Maryland and Colorado, in addition to traveling assignments in New Mexico, California, Wisconsin, Alaska and Canada. Following retirement, Bob continued to lend his expertise in government purchasing as a consultant to companies such as RCA, GE, Martin-Marietta, Lockheed-Martin, as well as other smaller companies.
As a capable leader, Bob took on many positions of responsibility, across a wide range of organizations. He was president of the Square Circle Sportsmen's Club. He was president of the Serra Club of Burlington County. He was Associate Captain of St. Joseph's in the Hills in Malvern, PA. He was highly active at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Moorestown, serving as a lector and reader, extraordinary minister and committee chair for funeral sacristans and altar servers, Bob was especially committed to the Knights of Columbus. He served as district deputy and as president of the Burlington County Chapter of the Knights. He served, long enough and faithfully enough to become a Faithful Navigator and Honorary Life Member of the John Tatham Assembly, 4th degree; he was twice Past Grand might, and was an Honorary Life Member of Council 1082 (Moorestown). The Knights of Columbus are invited to participate in the memorial.
An avid musician, Bob started with his high school band, and continued to be a musician throughout his early adulthood. Bob played almost every instrument, but was most often a drummer.
Anyone who knew Bob was sure to be regaled with one (or more) of his humorous stories. Bob had an endless supply of jokes and funny tales, and loved to perform, often as a master of ceremonies for formal functions. He was always the life of the party.
The family will receive visitors at The McChesney Funeral Home at 30 West Main Street, Moorestown on Friday, April 13, between 7pm and 9pm; Saturday, April 14 between 9am and 10am. A Celebration of Life Mass will be at 10:30 am at Our Lady of Good Counsel, Moorestown. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Moorestown Knights of Columbus Council 1082 at Our Lady of Good Counsel, 42 West Main Street, Moorestown, NJ 08057
