He was the son of Andrew Johnston and Louisa Jane Vaughn Dixon. He was the grandson of John and Louisa Huddleston Vaughn of Macon Co, TN.

James married Bettie Lizabeth Faulkenberry in Nevada, Collin County, Texas on 29 Sept 1912. They had 7 children, Lillie Agnes, JC, Arietta, Lois Louise, Velma Violet, Ila Belle, and Refa Nell.
