Mrs. James Banks
An old fashioned mother surrendered all that was mortal to the inevitable and entered the spirit world at noon Sunday in the person of Mrs. James Banks, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank W. Evans, at Lewistown, after a protracted illness. Deceased, who was Miss Rosanna McConnahy, was born in Huntingdon county, where she spent her early life and was married to James Banks April 26th, 1860. Thirteen children were born to this union, eleven of whom survive. The two eldest, Samuel and Frank, died within a few days of each other from scarlet fever when one and three years old, since which time, a period of fifty-five years, no death has occurred in the immediate family.
Mrs. Banks was 74 years, six months and nine days old at the time of her death and is survived by her husband, James Banks, who also makes his home with the daughter, Mrs. Evans, eight sons and three daughters: L.L., general trainmaster, D.S., chief train dispatcher, T.L., train dispatcher, C.R., ticket clerk, all of Altoona; A.B., a passenger brakeman, Harrisburg--all employed on the Middle division; J.D., train dispatcher, Harrisburg, on the Philadelphia Division; E.J., a train director at Pittsburgh, on the Pittsburgh division; G.W., a train dispatcher at Oil City, on the Buffalo and Allegheny division; Mrs. Frank W. (Martha) Evans and Mrs. N.J. (Linnie) Bailey, both of Lewistown, and Mrs. Harvey (Eva) Smith, of Philadelphia. Mrs. Banks probably gave more sons towards the successful operation of the Pennsylvania railroad than any other woman of history, as her eight sons all learned telegraphy in the offices of the company and worked their way to responsible and lucrative positions in the service. The father, James Banks, is also a retired railroad employee. Mrs. Banks is also survived by the following sisters and brother, ---Mrs. Lizzie Stewart and George Price, of Durand, Wisconsin; James Price, of Newton Hamilton, and Mrs. Rebecca Banks, of Tyrone, John T. Price, deceased, late of Mapleton, was a brother of the deceased.
After a few years of their married life spent at Barree, Blair Furnace, and Newton Hamilton the parents moved to Ryde, where they lived until Mr. Banks retired from the service, when they moved to Lewistown in order to be close to their two daughters who were untiring in their attention to the aged parents.
The deceased was well known throughout this part of the county and friends will be sorry to learn of her death.
The funeral services were conducted from the home of her daughter on Wednesday forenoon at 10:30 and interment was made at Lewistown.
