Note that the headstone shows Willis J. Baker. The Palmyra Massacre monument on the court house square in Palmyra, Missouri, lists his name as Willis T. Baker. I have found no documentation to support either middle initial. Since the headstone clearly shows J, this memorial shows Willis J. Baker as the name.

Willis was born 4 Jan 1808 in Steele Run, Nicholas, Kentucky. Willis married Henrietta Hardy 12 June 1830 in Nicholas County, Kentucky.

No one knows for sure when or where son John Armistead Baker (born 4 May 1833) died. John was involved in the shooting of Ezekiel Pratt in his community. The details of the shooting are unclear. John left home and was not heard from again. One story indicates that he rode with Quantrill's Raiders and was killed in a skirmish.

The burial place for son James Thomas "Tom" Baker, born 4 Jan 1834, has not been located.

Son William Baker, 5 Dec 1842 - 12 Jul 1846. Nothing has been found as to where he died.

Brother of Willis Martin H. Baker, 1828 - 15 Apr 1855, died in Lewis County, Missouri with unknown burial.

Historical Note: Willis, along with his daughter-in-law's brother, Hiram Smith, was executed in the Palmyra Massacre at Palmyra, Missouri, during the Civil War.
