Funeral services for Gretchen Peck Johnson, 96, of Cushing will be held at 11:30
a.m. Saturday at the Mount Olive Baptist Church, 1001 North Cleveland Street in
Cushing. Rev. Johnson Vickers and Bishop Gregory Davis will preside; interment
will follow at the Silver Star Cemetery in Cushing.
Services will be under the direction of the Palmer Funeral Home of Cushing.

Johnson was born in Des Arc, Louisiana. She was the daughter of the late George Phillip
and Josephine Batts Peck. Following the death of her mother (shortly after her
birth) she was cared for by Samuel and Amanda Wade Batts, her maternal
grandparents.

At the age 12 her maternal aunt, Sociable Batts Blackwell (Hun) and uncle, Benjamin
Blackwell (Uncle Pero), provided her a loving home in Sapulpa.

With their support, she was able to complete her secondary education at Bishop
College's Secondary Department High School in Marshall, Texas.

She earned a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Langston
University and a master's of education degree from Alabama State University,
Montgomery, Ala.

While at Langston University she met and married the late Joe S. Johnson May 4,
1929.

They were blessed with a 39 year union and one son. As a couple, the Johnson's
were dedicated educators who shared the joys and challenges of life together
until his death Aug. 1, 1968.

Her career as a primary teacher spanned over 40 years. She also held life
memberships in the Oklahoma Education Association and the Payne County Retired
Education Association.

A committed lifetime child of God and church member, she grew up in Mount Olive
Baptist Church in Sapulpa. In 1939, she moved to Cushing. She remained a devoted
member of Cushing's Mount Olive Baptist Church until she relocated to Silver
Spring, Md., to be near her son and his family.

In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by her
siblings, Reggie (Buddy) Peck and Elizabeth Peck Vaughn.

Survivors include her son, Joe Louis; daughter in-law, Carrie, granddaughter and
her husband, Jolanda Lanita and, Mark Frayman; grandson, Joe Louis, Jr.;
nephews, Reggie Peck, J.D. Johnson, Joe Warner Garrett; niece, Pauline Vaughn-
Strickland, goddaughter, Nancy Davis and extended family and loyal friends.
