Jonah Darrell Cox served with the Louisville Division of Police from 1971 until his death. He was shot and killed in an altercation that started outside of a night club. He intervened in a dispute between two men. One of the men had fired shots with a handgun during the dispute. The armed man fled the scene with Officer Cox in pursuit attempting to arrest him. After catching up with the fleeing man in a nearby restaurant parking lot the man shot Officer Cox at point blank range.
Officer Cox was survived by a daughter.

A jury deadlocked in the first trial of the two accused individuals in the case. Before a second trial could begin both of the accused pled guilty to reduced charges. The shooter pled to voluntary manslaughter and received two years. His accomplice pled guilty to being an accessory to voluntary manslaughter and received two years.
