William attended Shadyside Academy, class of 1887, Yale 1891. In college he played on the university baseball team, served on the Class Ivy committee, and was a member of Psi Upsilon and Scroll and Key. After graduation he studied law, one year at Harvard and the next year at the University of PA. In Jun 1893, he was admitted to the Allegheny Bar and started to practice law in the firm of Dalzell, Scott and Gordon, in which he became a junior partner on Jan 1, 1897, after his father's retirement from the law firm.

After the death of William Scott, the senior partner, he formed a new partnership, Mar 1, 1906, with Gordon Fisher, B.A. Princeton 1895, Edwin P. Young, L.L.B. Cornell 1894, and Richard H. Hawkins, under the firm name of Dalzell, Fisher, Young and Hawkins, which became Dalzell, Fisher and Hawkins, in Mar 1908. This firm was dissolved also owing to Hawkins having joined the regular army, and in Apr 1919 he and Gordon Fisher formed a new partnership with Robert D. Dalzell, under the firm name of Dalzell, Fisher & Dalzell. The firm was solicitor for the PA Railroad in Allegheny.

He was a Republican and a member of the Third Presbyterian Church.
