Harold Calvin Whitis, 85, of Port Hadlock died Jan. 1, 2003, at Bremerton Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born March 26, 1917, in Kamiah, Idaho, to William and Dora (Hoskins)Whitis.Mr. Whitis served in the Army from 1942 to 1945, achieving the rank of corporal and participating in battles and campaigns in Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, Central Europe and the Rhineland. He was awarded the European, African, Middle East Service Medal, the Bronze Service Arrowhead and the Good Conduct Medal. He later worked as a long-haul trucker. Mr. Whitis was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Chapter 7498 and the 62nd AFA Battalion Association. Survivors include his companion of 13 years, Sheala (Parker) Anderson of Port Hadlock; a son, Gordon J. Whitis; three daughters, Patricia W. Dillard and Peggy and Pat Whitis; and two sisters, Jean Loomis of Sun City, Ariz., and Ruby Carlson of Tacoma. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Ray, Joe and Woodrow Whitis, and two sisters, Margaret Whitis and Vera (Whitis) Riclik.An inurnment service will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent.
