Deceased Name: Wendell Asklund
Services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Funeral Home for Wendell B. Asklund, 90, Topeka, who died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at home.
He was born April 27, 1911, in Osage County, to Axel and Ida Erickson Asklund. He graduated from Agenda High School in Agenda northeast of Concordia in 1927 and from Strickler's Business College in Topeka. He was employed by the Gas Service Co. for 45 years. He was office manager of the Topeka division before he retired in 1976.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II, having served as chief storekeeper aboard the mine-layer USS Weekawken in both the Atlantic and Pacific.
He was a longtime member of Brookwood Covenant Church, where he served on the board for 29 years. He had served as chairman of the church board, as church treasurer and on the board of trustees and taught the Berean Sunday school class at the church.
He was a member of Topeka Knife and Fork Club, Shawnee Country Club and Evening Sertoma Club. He had served on the boards of the Topeka United Way and Topeka Credit Bureau.
He married Lou Ella H. Magnus on Dec. 16, 1945, in the Brantford community northeast of Concordia. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Clair W. Asklund, Stoneham, Mass.; and a daughter, Marilyn L. Asklund, Topeka.
Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Covenant Church Cemetery in the Brantford community in Washington County. Mr. Asklund will lie in state after 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.
