This artists drawing of Darius Pingrey was obtained from the book titled "The Descendants of Moses Pingry of Ipswich Massachusetts" by William Pingry.

Darius descended from many New England families, all of which settled in the early 1600's in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. His fourth great grandfather was Deacon Moses Pingry (1608-1695) of Ipswich, Massachusetts, the forefather of the Pingrey family in America. His sixth great grandfather was Captain Myles Standish (1583-1656) of the Mayflower.
Darius grew up on his parent's farm on Pingrey Hill Road just north of Andover, New York. At the age of 17 he entered college and worked his way through school by teaching school and working on the family farm. He graduated from Alfred University in 1863 with an A.M. Degree. The following year he concluded a course at Lowell's Business College at Binghamton, New York where he became aquainted with Senator Daniel S. Dickinson, noted politician and associate of President Lincoln. He followed that by teaching at Reading Business College in Reading, Pennsylvania where he was appointed an Official Reporter to the Pennsylvania State Senate in 1866. This was followed by a position as Principal of Harrisburg College, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. In 1867 he became a reporter for the United States Senate and at the close of that term, in the early summer of 1867 Darius went west to Illinois.
He held positions in various schools in central Illinois as an educator, Pricipal and as Superintendant of Schools.

On July 16, 1868 he married Marrian L. Harrington in Fulton County, Illinois. Marrian was the daughter of Catherine and Madison Galusha Harrington, a lawyer in New York City and law partner of noted New York lawyer Edwin W. Stoughton. Madison died in Brooklyn, New York on April 30, 1862. Marrian was born on August 25, 1848 in Brooklyn, New York and was living in St. Johnsbury, Vermont prior to moving to Illinois in December of 1867. Darius and Marrian had two children together, Claire, who became a businessman in Bloomington and Harry, an infant, who died of consumption (tuberculosis)at three months old in 1873. Marrian died a few days later on December 14, 1873 at their home in Chillicothe, Illinois of the same affliction.

In 1872 the Honorable Newton Bateman, the head of Illinois Department of Education, bestowed upon Darius a state teaching credential. Darius studied law, taught law and lectured law. In 1877 he passed the Illinois State Bar Exam and soon set up a law practice in Bloomington, Illinois. In 1894, Alfred University bestowed upon Darius "Doctorate of Laws". He taught law at Wesleyan Law School in Bloomington from 1899 to 1905 and lectured for the Chicago College of Law. Darius wrote many legal papers and books on law, some of which are still used as authoratative resources in the legal field today.

On July 1, 1878 Darius married to his second wife, Emma Wykoff in Lawndale Twp, McLean County, Illinois. Darius and Emma had one son, Roy Elliott Pingrey who became an archetect and lived near Chicago. Emma was born on November 2, 1860 in Lawndale Township, McLean County, Illinois and was the daughter of William Wikoff and Cleopatra Minerva Collins.

Darius was well known as an eloquent speaker and many came from afar to hear him speak. Darius Harlan Pingrey died of degeneration of the kidneys at his son Roy Pingrey's home in Highland Park, Illinois. His wife Emma preceeded him in death and he and Emma are buried in the Chenoa, Illinois Cemetery. It is presumed that his first wife Marrian and son Henry were buried in the Chillicothe, Illinois Cemetery where they lived when they died. There are two burial plots in the cemetery at Chillicothe owned by Darius H. Pingrey but no record of any burials exists in the records and there are no grave markers on the plots.

Darius' brother Reverend Albert W. Pingrey honored him by naming three of his sons after him and his wife; Darius Charles Pingrey, Harrington Chase Pingrey and Harlan Judson Pingrey.
