Following family tradition, Mary Hazel Blackler was called by her middle name, Hazel, by her family and friends.

Hazel was born August 8th, 1905, at Savannah, Andrew County, Missouri, the daughter of George Edwin Blackler and Susan Stella Edelman.

"Hazel moved with her parents to Missoula, Montana, arriving July 28th, 1909, and then moved with them to Bonner County, Idaho near Newport, Washington in 1916. Hazel graduated from Newport High School, and then attended the University of Montana at Missoula."

"Hazel never married. Veva Babb and Hazel met in Cheney, Washington while attending a WPA school. Veva passed a note down the line to Hazel and asked her if she would have coffee with her. They started living together in 1935 and were lifelong partners. Veva died July 3, 1973."
