"Hook" entered the the military on March 10, 1942 at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. Assigned to Company B, 33rd Armored Engineer Battalion, 7th Armored Division. He was taken as a P.O.W. on October 29, 1944 during the "Battle of the Canals", and imprisoned at Stalag 3B, Furstenberg, Brandenburg, Germany (Prussia) and liberated by the advancing Russian Army on July 2, 1945.
He was discharged on September 13, 1945.
He was one of 11 children left as orphans born to Thomas Jefferson and Sally Jane Durham. At age four, he was adopted by T. C. and Sadie Stanfield.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 65 years, Martha Wood Durham.
His surviving daughters are Elaine Fronczak, Mary Jo Griffin, Diane Bray and Karen Green.
