James served with the 4th Battalion Dorsetshire Regiment he was captured during Operation Market Garden after a failed attempt to reinforce airborne troops at Arnhem Sep 1944. He was sent to Stalag X11-A Limburg and in Feb 1945 was forced marched to avoid being liberated by advancing Soviet forces. He was killed in an air raid on Leipzig, Germany.
