He came to the United States with two of his brothers: Johannes & George Michael Baumgaertner. Johannes lived in St. Louis and George Michael moved to Riverside, California.
Matheus (changed to Mathew) married Anna Maria Kaufman on August 13, 1856 in St. Louis, Missouri. Of this union, twelve children were born: Mary Ida, Joseph, George, Annie Elizabeth, Henry, Frank, Emmett, Christian, Mary Frances, Matthew, and William.
