Samuel Dayton was a veteran of the US Civil War. He was a wagoner for Company H of the 1st Minnesota Infantry. He enlisted on 22 May 1861, saw action at the 1st Battle of Bull Run on July 21, 1861, and was honorably discharged for disability on August 22, 1861.
He lived in the St. Cloud, MN area since 1855 and was living with his son, Clark, at 903 1st Ave. S. in St. Cloud when he died. This home no longer exists and the land is now part of St. Cloud State University. He was survived by a family of five sons and seven daughters.
The funeral took place at the Mission School in Lower Town, St. Cloud in the city's south side (in the area of St. Cloud State University) and was officiated by Rev. F.E. Ross of the Methodist church of St. Cloud.
