George Allen Drinkwalter, 81 - September 14, 2011

George Allen Drinkwalter was born December 12, 1929 to Loren (Slim) and Esther Drinkwalter at Kilgore, NE. He died September 14, 2011 at Scottsbluff, NE.
He grew up in the Kilgore area. He attended school at ABC country school on the Niobrara River and lived with his grandparents in Valentine to attend high school for the ninth and tenth grades. He quit school to go back to the river to take care of the ranch. In 1951 he joined the U.S. Army and was in the service during the Korean Conflict. George was stationed in Germany for two years and received an honorable discharge.
He returned to the Sandhills in January 1953, where he met Isla Hamit. George and Isla were married August 22, 1953 and celebrated 58 years of marriage in 2011. To this union four boys were born; Darrell, Keith, Randy and Steve. He loved spending any free time with his family and attended his boys sporting events, and later his grandchildren's events. George even learned a little about the game of volleyball. After his marriage to Isla, George worked with his Dad on the Niobrara River, George and Isla then moved to Valentine, where George drove a gas truck for Standard Oil. In 1956 George and Isla moved to Casper. WY. While living in Casper he worked for oil companies and the US Postal Service. In 1960 George and Isla returned to the Niobrara River to his uncle Slim Coleman's place. He worked with his uncle on shares and later purchased the ranch. George and Isla remained there 33 years, until he retired in 1993, and have lived the last 15 years in Cody, NE.
Most important to George, after his family was ranching. George was an avid steward of the land and spent many nights sitting on the hill during lightning storms watching for fires. The only time he missed a sporting event was because he was fighting a range fire. If a vacation was taken at all it was to visit family. George was an avid Husker fan as long as it didn't interfere with the ranch. George also read a lot of western books during calving. His favorite author was Louis L'Amour. After retirement, George's hobbies were puzzles, cards and cribbage. George didn't know a stranger and could visit with anyone. George served over 20 years on the local school board, and stayed involved with the schools, driving bus and attended many activities. He was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 319 at Cody, NE.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Loren (Slim) and Esther, sisters: Irene Bernick and Lois Keim, and great granddaughter McKenzie. He is survived by his wife Isla of Cody, NE; two brothers Jim (Kate) of Valentine, NE; Bill (Gail) of Hot Springs, SD; six sisters: Dorothy Sharp of Hot Springs, SD; Mary Lou Thorton of Thermopolis, WY; Delma (Dave) Fischer of Maywood, NE; Alma Lea (Phil) Keller of Fort Collins, CO; Betty (Mike) Boykin of Cottonwood, AZ; Charlotte Edwards of Seward, NE; sons: Darrell (Donna) of Casper, WY; Keith (Linda) of Chadron, NE; Randy of North Platte, NE; Steve of Casper, WY; eight grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
