Retired Major Kenneth "Ken" L. Ayers passed away peacefully at home January 19, 2010, after a brief battle with cancer.

Born to William Lester and Paula Ayers in Athens, Ga, May 21, 1919. He married Ruby Helon Howard in 1942. He was an Army veteran of WW II and the Korean War. Joining the service in 1937 he worked his way aup in the ranks. He led his company of "Rail-Splitters" in the Battle of the Bulge as well as many others and was heavily decorated throughout his military career. He received many well-deserved medals including several purple hearts. After retirement in 1960, he left the past behind and took over management of the Elk's Club in Tallahassee. After several years, he moved to Pompano Beach to manage the Elk's Club there. He moved back to Tallahassee in 1966 where he opened the now legendary Ken's Tavern. There he met and made countless friends who still cherish the good times and friendships they have maintained all these years. He never met a stranger and was always ready to lend a helping hand to a student or friend in need. After selling Ken's in 1999, he spent most of his time gardening in his yard with Helon.

Ken was a member of The Odd Fellows, The Old-Timers, Jackson Lodge #1 Free and Accepted Masons, and a charter member of the Marzuq Shrine, was a lifetime member of The Legion of Honor, Ambassador Ameritus, Paper Crusade chairman
which organized the efforts of members of Marzuq and brought the 22 Shrine hospitals the much needed support to be able to help children get the medical attention they required.

He is survived by his wife of 68 yrs., Helon, sons Jerry W. Ayers, Kenny and wife Erin Ayers, daughter Pamela L. Bullock, grandson Kenny Bullock, two great-grandchildren Nevaeh and Mariah Bullock, his brother Crawford, sister Martha, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter Paula Ayers Lee, his brother Donald, and sisters Anita and Catherine.

Ken will be missed and remembered by countless friends and family.
