Dr. Louis C. Bourgeois III, Ph.D., 82, passed away Tuesday, March 16, 2010, in Tallahassee. He was born in Opelousas, Louisiana, on May 27, 1927. Dr. Bourgeois was a proud veteran who served his country in World War II. Stationed in Osaka, Japan, he acted as a translator for the U.S. Army. He received the World War II Victory medal and Army of Occupation medal for his service. An avid student of languages, Dr. Bourgeois received his B.A. from Louisiana State University and his Master's and Doctorate from U.C.L.A. in Hispanic Languages and Literature. He became an Associate Professor at Florida State University in the Department of Modern Languages, where he taught from 1963 to 1995. While at FSU, he received a grant to study Chilean culture and history at the University of Santiago. Dr. Bourgeois was a man of integrity and compassion who was beloved by his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis C. and Alicia May Bourgeois, of Opelousas, La.; brother, Henri Lastrapes Bourgeois of Las Cruces, N.M.; and uncle, Henry Stubbs of Opelousas, La. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 54 years, Josephine G. (Jo) Bourgeois; daughter, Carmen Bourgeois Green; son, Louis Robert Bourgeois (and Marie) of Tampa; three brothers, George Stubbs Bourgeois (and Jeanette) of Opelousas, La., Peter Jaime Bourgeois (and Patricia) of Woodland Park, Co., and Stephen David Bourgeois (and Madeline) of Albuquerque, N.M.; grandchildren, Andrew Green and Jake,...

The family will receive visitors at Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home on Timberlane Road at 12 p.m. EDT on Saturday, March 27, and a memorial service will be held in the MeadowWood Chapel at 1 p.m. EDT. A private family burial will follow at Roselawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Hospice, 1545 Raymond Diehl Road, Suite 102, Tallahassee, Florida 32308.
