Floyd Leon Swanberg went to his first church service in heaven on Sunday morning, October 28, 2012. He was 84 years old. Floyd was born September 18, 1928, to Elof and Agda Swanberg.
Floyd grew up on a farm in the New Sweden community near Manor, Texas. He graduated from Manor High School in 1945 where he excelled in football and basketball. After graduation, Floyd left the farm and moved to Austin. During this time, he played semi-pro fast pitch softball and was known as the "Hurler". In Austin, he was employed by the Texas Insurance Advisory Association in 1945, and for the next 45 years he ran the TIAA Forms Department until he retired in 1991. And, for many years, Floyd ran a part-time moving and hauling business. He was called "The Golden Rule" Mover. But, one of his favorite jobs was working as an usher for the Texas Longhorn football games at Memorial Stadium.
Floyd always had the heart of a servant. In his service to community, he coached little leagues, took people to church, served as PTA president for Maplewood Elementary School, and served as Booster Club president during the Reagan High School State Championship years. Go Big Blue!
In the late 1940's, Floyd joined the National Guard. He served in the 36th Infantry Division of the National Guard at Camp Mabry in Austin, Texas, for 21 years, reaching the rank of Major.
Most importantly, Floyd enjoyed service to His Lord and Savior through the local church. His lifetime of service began in 1955 at Asbury United Methodist Church. There he taught Sunday School, led the MYF, and became a lay preacher. In 1976, Floyd and Pauline joined Windsor Park Baptist Church. Floyd continued his role as Sunday School teacher and deacon. At Windsor Park, he worked faithfully in the Evangelism Explosion program. Finally, in 1992, Floyd and Pauline moved their membership to Hyde Park Baptist Church where Floyd continued to serve the Lord as Deacon, SS teacher, and usher! And, on many occasions, Floyd went with the Gideons to hand out Bibles on the UT campus.
We thank the Lord for Floyd Leon Swanberg. He was a great man and faithful servant. He set a Godly example for all, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Floyd was preceded in death by his parents, Elof and Agda; his sister, Dorothy Swanberg Daniel and her husband, Robert Daniel, of Dayton, Ohio; and his brother-in-law, Bobby Ellison.
Floyd is survived by his loving wife of over 63 years, Pauline (his "Boogie"); his daughter, Darlene Simril and her husband, Reece, of Bella Vista, Arkansas; his son, Dr. Dennis Swanberg and his wife, Lauree, of Monroe, Louisiana; his daughter, Teri Tidmore and her husband, Robert, of Houston, Texas; his brother, Gene Swanberg and his wife, Nell, of Austin, Texas; his sister-in-law, Mary Lou Ellison of Austin, Texas; his four grandchildren, Shellye Challa and her husband, Pratap, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Greggory Simril and his wife, Erin, of Noblesville, Indiana; Chad Swanberg of Monroe, Louisiana; Dustin Swanberg of Monroe, Louisiana; two step-grandchildren, Tiffany and Ashley Tidmore of Houston; seven great-grandchildren, Malli, Mia, and Maya Challa, Eli, Reagan, Lydia, and Ike Simril; as well as many loving nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the nurses and staff of Cedar View Rehab and Skilled Nursing Center for their love and care for Floyd while he was there for the past six months.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o'clock until seven o'clock in the evening, on Thursday, the 1st of November 2012, at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, Texas.
A visitation will be held prior to the funeral service from noon to half past one o'clock in the afternoon at Hyde Park Baptist Church.
The funeral service will be conducted at two o'clock in the afternoon on Friday, the 2nd of November 2012, at Hyde Park Baptist Church, 3901 Speedway, Austin, Texas under the direction of Cook-Walden Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Cook-Walden Capital Parks Cemetery in Pflugerville, Texas.
Serving as active pallbearers are Greggory Simril, Chad Swanberg, Dustin Swanberg, Michael Daniel, Randy Swanberg, and Cody Roedl.
