Alma was the youngest daughter of Clarence Byrd and Laura Victoria Lee Cox of Fredericksburg, Virginia. Her siblings were Calvin Ray, Evelyn Elizabeth, and Clarence Elwood Cox. Alma graduated from Fredericksburg High School, and was a life-long member of the First Christian Church in Fredericksburg.
She married Herman Franklin Dorsey in 1939. They had two children; Richard Wayne and Christine Ellen Dorsey, both born in Washington, D.C.
Alma was a caring and giving person to all.
