OBITUARY - Two deaths occured in our city on Saturday, the 1st instant, and the funerals took place on Sunday, under the auspices of the Masons. The deceased were both emigrants and had just arrived here, but had been taken sick on the road sometime previous, and only arrived here as it were in time to die and have a respectful burial. John V. Green, one of the deaceased persons was from Lawrence, Missouri. His wife was with him as they were traveling in company with their brother-in-law, Mr. Jacob Rainwater and family, who has a wife and six children. Their destination was Dayton, Columbia county, Washington Territory, where Mr. Rainwater has a brother by the name of Jacob Rainwater. Deceased had been taken sick on the road from exposure, thirteen days previous to his arrival and died the first night after his arrival. He was a highly respected citizen and a member of Red Oak Lodge A. T. & A. M., No. 468, under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Missouri. The other deceased, W. F. Scroggins; was from Arkansas; was married last winter and his wife was in company with him. They were on their way to Umatilla county, oregon. His brother, Thomas Scroggins, lives in this city, and is driving team for J. B. Emery, of Idaho City. The brother met them at Kelton and brought them by team to the Cold Spring station on the Overland road; but deceased was taken sick with the mountain fever before they left Kelton and grew worse on the way and finally took the stage with his wife at Cold Spring station and arrived here before he died and put up at his brothers house; but grew worse and died on Saturday, and was buried by the Masons on Sunday, of which order he was a member in good standing, belonging to the Chapel Lodge No. 151, under the Grand Lodge of Arkansas. Decased was a good member of society, and very much respected by those who knew him.

Buried across lots 6 and 7 per sexton's records. However, William F. Scroggins was buried at the same time and doesn't appear in the records. I believe these men each have one of the adjacent plots.
